As everyone knows Buzz Lightyear is a fictional character (a Space Ranger superhero) voiced by Tim Allen in the Toy Story franchise released by Walt Disney Pictures and produced by Pixar Animation Studios in 1995. Fans may wish to see the return of Buzz Lightyear action figure, however the co-writer and director of the Lightyear film Angus MacLane (2016 Finding Dory) pointed up that Lightyear was made as a truly standalone film.

Lightyear is an upcoming American computer-animatedaction-adventure, dramafamily, and science fiction film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is a spin-off of the Toy Story film series, acting as an origin story.

Is Tim voicing Buzz in Lightyear film?

The moment Pixar Animation Studios announced that they were making an origin story movie about the real Buzz Lightyear, Pixar animator and director MacLane wanted to explore what inspired the Buzz Lightyear toy that was so near and dear to Andy in the Toy Story movies. MacLane and his producer Galyn Susman decided to cast actor Chris Evans (Captain America) as this iteration of Buzz Lightyear needed a different voice and not use Allen’s voice, made it clear that this is not the Toy Story Buzz.

Summary

Lightyear tells the story of young astronaut Captain Buzz Lightyear’s platonic relationship with Commanding Officer Alisha Hawthorne (voiced by Uzo Aduba). Hawthorne sets him off on a mission that accidentally sends him 62 years in the future.

Captain Buzz is working with Star Command after stranded on a hostile planet with his commander and crew, attempt to escape a planet that he and his fellow Space Rangers have marooned for a full year. Now he’s a man out of time, longing for the life he left behind and working alongside Alisha’s granddaughter Izzy Hawthorne (voiced by Keke Palmer).

As finding a way back home through space and time, they plan to destroy the alien ship and confronting a threat to the universe's safety. As seen in the trailers, they’re dealing with the arrival of Emperor Zurg (voiced by James Brolin) and his robot army, to protect the universe. Emperor Zurg is a giant robot or a man in a robotic suit as antagonist.

There are also clips featuring Buzz's robot kitten companion, Sox the cat voiced by Director Peter Sohn (The Good Dinosaur) who looks to be the movie's comedy buddy character.

How Lightyear fits into the Toy Story Franchise?

The film trailer shows an origin story for Buzz Lightyear. Starting his rise from space pilot to space ranger.

Pete Doctor, Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer and longtime director for the studio explained that Lightyear would be unlike anything they have done before.

Conclusion

New Lightyear on trailers feature more real Buzz Lightyear and space rangers. While the first trailer focused on the wonder of intergalactic flight, there are more actions shown off. We see more of Buzz in his traditional green and white space ranger suit, which may be a combat model to aid in his fight against a bunch of heavily armored enemy soldiers. He also contends with gigantic robot and a resemblance of antagonist Emperor Zurg from the Toy Story films.

A new poster features Buzz in the iconic suit walking down the runway of a spaceport, as well as the release date. Lightyear film is schedule to be release in the United States on June 17, 2022.
